Guidance Department
Mrs. Mason is a School Counselor at both Wolf Hill and Maple Place Schools. Mrs. Mason looks forward to a great year ahead supporting the students of Oceanport School District.
When students feel connected to their school environment, they are more likely to succeed academically and socially. The Collaborative for Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) framework focuses on five core competencies including Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Responsible Decision Making and Relationship Skills. Mrs. Mason's work with students is guided by this CASEL framework. Below are some of the ways the Guidance department supports students:
Individual Counseling
Students meet individually with their School Counselor. This typically focuses on setting and supporting social, emotional and academic goals as well as navigating friendship and emotional regulations. Students may make an appointment to see a counselor or the counselors may periodically check in with individuals. Teachers and parents may also refer students to meet with counselors.
Small Group Counseling and Lunch Bunch
Students meet in weekly small groups with the School Counselor. Groups typically focus on a specific topic or goal to work on in a supportive small group environment. Students are recommended for small groups by their classroom teacher, counselor or parent/guardians.
Small groups of students have lunch together and socialize in a relaxed and fun setting.
Parent/Teacher Consult
The School Counselor is available to meet with a parent and/or teacher to discuss any specific concerns.
Classroom Lessons
School Counselors visit classrooms to teach character education lessons and other topics geared towards social and emotional wellness.
